~ Doctors from Grand Falls opened a clinic in Robert’s Arm in 1972 and in 1976, they moved to more modern offices in the municipal building.  Doctors continued to provide services at that location until its closing in June 2006.

~ Located at Burton's Enterprise Building is Robert's Arm Community Health Centre.  At this Centre, services of a Public Health Nurse and a Continuing Care Nurse are provided.   In February 2008, doctors from Green Bay Health Care Centre in Springdale, as well as a Nurse Practitioner, began holding clinics on a part-time basis at the Robert's Arm site.  (They also serve the surrounding Green Bay South area.) 

~ The first recorded marriage in Robert’s Arm was performed by Reverend J. Laster on December 21, 1881.  The bride was Miss Louise Baines of Boot Harbour and the groom was Mr. Jesse Lock of Little Bay Islands.

~ In 1924, the mine reopened in Robert’s Arm and worked for three years after producing another 2,000 tons of copper.

~ Waste from the mine was used to build the community wharf and the remaining waste was used to build a road through the town.

~ Many men from other communities working in Tommy’s Arm moved to Robert’s Arm with their families.  The population began to rise.

~ It was said that Tommy’s Arm got its name from an old trapper who lived at the bottom of the arm who was named Mr. Tommy Lewis.

~ In 1908 a telegraph office , which was called a repeating office, was built.  All calls for outlying islands were copied and relayed to Robert’s Arm by Morse Code.

The first post office was opened in 1908 in the same building as the telegraph office.  The first known postmaster was Mr. Kenneth Rowsell. Before that, the mail was delivered weekly by coastal boats (the Clyde or Home).  It was later done by dog teams.

 

~ The first organization to be opened in the community was the WPA (Women’s Patriotic Association) in the 1940's. Members knitted mitts, socks, and caps for the soldiers during WWI.  Wool for these types of projects were provided by the government.

~ In 1976, a drug store was opened under management of Mr. Roy Saunders of Springdale.

~ The first Fire Chief was Mr. Fred Morgan.

~ The Seniors' Manor opened in 1991.

~ Before there were roads, residents used boats or snowmobiles for transportation.  Mr. Edward Ryan ran the first taxi service.  Mr. Ryan also operated a restaurant and a convenience store.

~ In 1959, Riff's opened - a well-known department store chain in Newfoundland.

~ A well-known resident, Mr. Robert LeDrew (now deceased), has been known as a storyteller whom children for many years have loved.  One story in particular is The Magic Snow Shovel.  It seems that Bob, a United Church Minister, jointly owned a magic snow shovel.  After a heavy snowfall, all the children who lived close to Bob would have clean pathways, and when they'd ask where the shovel was... Bob would say, "the Minister is gone to Florida and has taken the shovel with him."

 

 

~ In 1991, the Town of Robert’s Arm awarded Mr. Joseph Anthony a Lifetime Service Award for being an outstanding and well-deserving citizen.
